The Irish Undaground Archives

Over the years The Irish Undaground has evolved and taken on many forms. From an eColumn which first appeared here on www.irishhiphop.com back in 2003 to an extensive album collection of my personal songs, collaborations, radio interviews, videos and a documentary, to its most recent manifestation as Ireland's first Irish Hip Hop Top 10 Chart Show, which began on the 1st of April 2006 and continues to this day.

What I do for Irish Hip Hop has become more than just a creative hobby. I am interested in seeing where this can go, as it has stood the test of time. For me, this is but one way of expressing my Kulture and staying connected with Ireland's youth, but it has also become an opportunity to contribute something constructive to this ever evolving cultural genre here in Ireland.

For the most part, this has always been a one man show; but only in that I work alone with my own resources. What I have created, however, has always been a community effort. Without www.irishhiphop.com's members, none of my creations would have been possible.

To keep things fresh and to keep the idea alive, I have recreated The Irish Undaground over and over. In its many forms, it has always had its limitations and I have always taken into consideration the constructive criticism that has been offered.

I am an Emcee, a Producer, Hiphop Philosopher,Teacha and Historian, Ireland's first MP3jay and perhaps even the first in the world to invent the term. Although I have an interest in all of the Elements of Hiphop Kulture, my forte is in this Audio section.

Peace!
Kounter Kulture

How can I get my song into the Charts?
First you must have a SoundClick account and you must register your country as Ireland. If you are living in Northern Ireland and you register your country as the UK, you will not be able to appear in the Charts.

Secondly, you must get as many people as possible to listen to the song you want to get into the Charts. In other words, you have to promote yourself.

Each song gets placed on the SoundClick Charts automatically, so you don't have to do anything once you have an account. Just make sure that as many people as possible listen to your song.

SoundClick checks all songs for popularity based on unique audio streams (song plays by different users). Then they crunch the numbers and compile the daily charts. Each band gets listed with their most popular song only for that genre in the charts, so a band can't cover 5 spots in a row.

To be eligible for the SoundClick Charts...
» a song must have a file size of at least 1.25 MB
» must have been played at least once over the last 8 days
» must not currently be under review

To be eligible for the Irish Hip Hop Charts...
» your track has to be on SoundClick for at least 21 days before it can qualify for the Charts
» your country must be registered as Ireland
» you must be contributing to the Irish Hip Hop genre (if your living in Ireland but representing a genre other than Irish Hip Hop, you will be excluded from the Top 10)
» must have lyrics in your song (no instrumentals will be included in the Top 10)

When are the charts updated?
The daily SoundClick charts are updated at approximately 6am Irish Time.
The Irish Undaground Top 10 Chart is revealed on Fridays.

How are the charts compiled?
The most important factor are the unique song streams (song plays by different users). If you also use the widgets to make the SoundClick MP3 player available somewhere else (e.g. on a MySpace page), the plays that come from there are counted as well, but only to a certain extent. Those plays are treated like anonymous plays on the SoundClick site.

The numbers you see on your band statistics page are total plays. But for the charts, SoundClick only counts unique plays; for example, if someone listens to your song 10 times in a row, your band statistics will show 10 plays, but for the charts, only the first play is counted. The other plays are no longer 'unique' for that day. In addition, all other things being equal, newer songs are ranked higher than songs that have been uploaded some time earlier.
