Put It On: Insights into the Creative Process of Representing Sound
Monday 26 March 2018

Curated by Creative Spark and Grandson, Put It On aims to provide insights into the creative process of representing sound. Taking place at the Spirit Store on Monday 26 March, we are delighted to present an evening of talks, visuals and music performances featuring some of the most creative people working in this field – from Dundalk, Dublin, Cork and San Diego we bring you an eclectic line up of panellists and performers.

Brian “B+” Cross is one of the most prominent music photographers working today. He has photographed more than one hundred album covers for artists such as Company
Flow, Damian Marley, David Axelrod, DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus, Eazy-E, J Dilla, Jurassic 5, Madlib, Mos Def, and Q-Tip. Cross was the director of photography for the Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, and he has made several feature-length music films and many music videos. His photos have appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Vibe, the Fader, and the Wire.

Niall McCormack is a commercial artist based in Dublin, Ireland. He specialises in music packaging and book cover design. A graduate of the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Niall has created numerous LP and CD covers for Ace Records as well as sleeves for Vampisoul, Tru Thoughts, WFMU, Demon Music Group and Planet Mu. His artwork graces book covers published by Vintage Books, Profile Books, The Lilliput Press, Gorse, Gill & Macmillan, Poetry Ireland and The Collins Press. McCormack has curated a number of exhibitions of Irish book cover art including a retrospective of the work of Dutch-born designer Cor Klaasen. He co-curated Green Sleeves: The Irish Printed Record Cover, 1955–2017 at the National Print Museum in 2017 with Dr. Ciarán Swan.

John Byrne describes himself as occupying the ground between ‘gatherer’ and ‘archivist’. He says ‘Most rabid music collectors have an insane affliction that isn’t necessarily any more logical than a deep need to hear more music. I do too, but I also the have the need to see neglected stuff get refried again.’
Quare Groove Volume One is two twelve inch records. The first one features groove and dancefloor sounds of the Irish late 70’s and early 80’s. The second record features how things sounded when the country’s post punk generation got their hands on the same danceflooring.

Local collector/curator, Brian McMahon of Brand New Retro, will chair a panel discussion with the three speakers – this promises to be a fascinating exploration of how we represent music through image and design.

There'll also be music on the night from Dublin house producer and DJ Frank B/Sias and a few tunes from local acts TPM and Jinx Lennon. The music performances have been coordinated by Peter Baldwin from local recording studio, Black Mountain Recordings.

The night kicks off at 7 PM and runs until 11:00 PM.
This is a free event, supported by CreateLouth, the Arts Service of Louth County Council, and Plus Print.
