illmatic 15th Year Anniversary
February 25, 2009 11:45AM

"illmatic" dropped 15 years ago, XXL are doing a special on the making of it in the next issue.
To this day, for me at least, no album has come near it (No Nas album especially)

I copped "illmatic" & "Enter the 36 Chambers" on the same day on tape when I was 15 (I was so hip-hop)
That was back when the only exposure to rap music was Yo! MTV Raps and HHC (I used to order albums off of the strength of their reviews in HHC)

Anyway at the time it dropped, everyone was ranting and raving about it and its one of the few timeless hip-hop albums, and it's my favourite album of all time (well tied at least with A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnite Mauraders")

Look how young Premier looks in the pic Smile

Anyone think there is a better hip-hop album?

Its the top hiphop album for me. In the words of jin i "copped it was written and then illmatic" Love it! Eery now and again when im in the mood i stick it on and listen striaght through. From the moment just after the intro fades out and new york state of mind kicks in its just a feel good 40 or so minutes. Not many albums i can enjoy like that.

Ya ever hear cormegas "one love" its the letter replying to everything nas said. Its not one of his disses or anything. Its pretty good.

The pic is so dope, A snapshot in time of hip-hop fashion. In 93-94 all hip-hop videos had either that carhaart hat that primo is wearing, the Indiana Braves Hockey shirt or the Helly Hanson Q-Tip has on Smile

One of my favourite albums, but Reasonable Doubt is ahead of it for me!

Nas is still the greatest ever to rap!

The beats are still amazing to this day.. look at the producers that were on that album- Large Pro, Premier, Pete Rock. - the holy trinity! Imagine having those guys on your FIRST album?!

You also have to mention MC Serch and Main Source who set Nas up with a career etc...

I think albums like Show + AG's 'Runaway Slave' come close but 'Illmatic' is an album that Nas never bettered. F*** It, dont listen to hip hop after 1995 kids, its not good for you.:-|

I am the most biased pro Jay-Z fan in the world and for me you can't even compare the two, while Nas may have been influenced heavily by the content of "Reasonable Doubt" as well as "Ready to Die" and "Cuban Linx" - I feel like nobody including himself will ever top that album

I would have loved to see what his second album would have been like had he not teamed up with Steve Stoute and the Trackmasters as lyrically he was still on point with "It was written" but most of it pales in comparison to the first one plus he went a bit Mafioso. My favourite part of "It was.." is Cormega's verse

"It's ill when M.Cs used to be on Cruddy sh*t took home "Ready to Die"listened studied sh*t, now they on some money sh*t
Biggie - "Kick In The Door"

"Who you thought 'Kick In The Door" was for?" Nas - "Last Real N- Alive"

anyway I digress

illmatic is the greatest hip-hop album ever made

Best hiphop album ever LOTPD. Having said that, it was nice of Q-Tipall the same to cut short his trip to Disneyland for the sake of a cool picture.

Me too.
Got them both in late '96/early '97.
I remember thinking "Nice one. Only £10" when I received Illmatic (because I had to order it).
Then I looked at it and was "What the fuck? Only 10 tracks".
Didn't blow me away straight away (same story with 36 chambers), but after a few listens I "got it".

XXL have a making of Illmatic special in their April edition, which rappersiknow.com have helpfully scanned and posted,
[www.rappersiknow.com]

Oh word give a good breakdown of the samples used here,
[www.ohword.com]

and you can download all of the samples from Hip-Hop is Read here,
[hiphopisread.blogspot.com]

and Kevin Nottingham has the samples to the 10 year anniversary bonus disk here,
[kevinnottingham.com]

All compulsory listening.

So to summarise, Illmatic is the best Hip-Hop album of all time. You should never be more than 10 yards from a copy.

anyway I put it on and was like "this shits crap" and i stuck it in the collection
then about 6 months later after hearing more of that old "illmatic is the greatest" bullshit
I siad id put it on and actually listen to it... now its my favorite album of all time

its my prize possesion

i once broke someones face(yes really had to have surgery) with an x box controller cause he was supposed to copy it and when he returned it the case was cracked
