> The art of B-Boying

During my years as a dancer, some thinks came to my attention.
Either by talking to other dancers or by "comparing" the elements
with other dance styles and drawing some kind of conclusion.
My personal impression is that most upcoming B-Boys are more impressed
by the artistic side of the whole thing, powermoves. Well, nothing
against it, but it seems rather odd if you are asked when telling
people that you are a breaker "Can you do a headspin?".
By viewing all the "impressive"
stuff in music videos or on bboying tapes such as the "Battle
of the Year" series, most may get a somehow distorted image of
our stuff.
To me B-Boying is an art
form. It is that simple. Some elements are artistic (and nice
to look at) and some elements are the "soul" and "style" of the
individual dancer: compare Swiftrock (Battle Squad) with one of
the Americans and you now what I mean. Everybody of them has an
individual style that is not biteable. It cannot be copied. No
matter how hard you try.
One of my favorite dancers,
the German B-boy Storm, once said that you have to expect the
unexpected when watching B-boys. The cmbination of your body flowing
to the rhythm of the music: Kicking some steps/styles and smoothly
going over to powermoves without the spectators realizing what
just happened. Go with the flow.
The other night I saw a documentary on the telly about the new-school
Tap dancing in New York, and guess what, suddenly a B-girl appeared
and smoothly adapted the rhythm of the music and this dance to
her uprock and busted some serious stylish powermoves, still on
the beat.
If you are a locker, popper or boogie dancer you always have to
be on the beat, or it looks too fast or awkward, maybe even clumsy.
For me, it is the same with B-boying, you go with the music, dance
on the beat and "break on a break".
You don't have to be good, basically its about the attitude you
have towards this unique art form - it isn`t even about battling,
no matter what people try to tell you. Competition is just a small
part. It is about being inspired and get down and dance.
Not that much different to Tango or Foxtrot or whatever.
Not copying other dancers` styles or routines may take longer,
but I think the goal is more worthwhile for all of us. Don`t try
to be somebody you are not. And the most important part…..Be
inspired.
Peace
to the global B-Boy tribe.
