For me graff in Ireland goes back to mid eighties, there was a
large amount of sporadic graff throughout the country mainly due
to the arrival of hip hop but that all but fizzled out, however
3 people made a huge influence in that period and in some respects
kept the flag flying, and that would be Hollis Byrne of Marxman
fame aka Sut One who was responsible for the most famous piece
in Dublin during that period, Sut
One on Ballybough tracks, just about still there today and
Jam and Ski from Drogheda who
kept graff alive from 85 to about 89, doing a lot of commissions
and even appearing
on tv.

I had been chalking up stuff since about 85 but didnt
really start until 87,and that was really from seeing a lot of
the Jam Ski stuff in Drogheda, I didn't know about the Sut One
pieces till much later, its also worth noting that a guy called
Spider had also began writing around Ballybough and apparently
did the first dart in the late eighties.
Graff was pretty much dead in Dublin by the early nineties, there
was a pretty large group of taggers in Cork, notably Sprog,
and a few of us in Drogheda, the Cork scene died a death, but
Drogheda continued to grow and in 1994 we staged the first bridge
jam. There was also a small fragmented scene in Belfast associated
with the fledgling hip hop scene but there was no cross border
connection until members of whats now known as TDS Crew came to
paint in Drogheda in 94. During the nineties before the first
bridge jam there were also visits by Acrid, an infamous train
painter from London who painted 8 darts while here and Trim 186
an early member of TDA Klann.

Dublin scene didnt really kick off again till about 96, one notable
exception was Jor who was busily painting unaware of any other
writers or a scene, we hooked up in 95 and the guy began killing
Dublin city, inspiring an army of copycats. Since 96 graff has
become pretty much established and has taken the road followed
by many scenes around the globe.

Over the last few years more and more writers have been getting
together to do bigger and better walls or productions as they
are known. This has resulted in some top quality collaborations
between artists from north and south and in more recent years
writers from as far afield as South Africa, Usa, Australia, Spain,
Denmark, Uk, Holland, Belgium, France and Germany have travelled
to Ireland to paint with the locals. This has definatley strengthened
the scene and helped develop the quality of work here. It has
also helped irish writers travel abroad and paint in various countries
around the globe including Uk, Sweden, Denmark,
Germany, France, Holland, Spain and Usa.
