This
is to be CC's last release to include DJ Mayhem, whose leaving
the band will undoubtly put a shadow of uncertainty over any future
releases by the shining lights of this scene, but does this particular
outing disappoint? Drop the needle on the A Side, Check The Vision,
and your fears that it might immeaditly evaporate. The mellow
flutes and acoustic guitars provided by The Xpert give the perfect
back drop for Messiah J to do what he does best, beat the shit
out the mic with top notch rhymes, a perfect flow and catchy punchlines.
The hook "it starts here" is possibly the most approprate
A Side hook ever quite simply because CC are really only getting
started.
Also on the A Side is I'd Give My Right Arm. When you're not laughing
your ass off at this "oh no I fucked a fat bird" misadventure
(or sympathising with the narrarator, depending on who you are),
you're simply blown away by the quality beat, mind boggling cuts,
amazing chemistry between the emcee, dj and producer and brilliant
lines like "those are mighty red locks and those are mighty
big thighs / she's a mighty big girl, now guess who ate all the
pies...".
The bonus track Overdose (the Dose Remix) is only alright and
kind of makes you think why did they bother messing about with
original, it was fine the way it was. Overall this 12" is
a step in a different direction from their previous release Bloodrush/The
Dose and their 2000 demo but its a direction CC should keep going
in. If you don't buy this single for the intelligent brilliance
of Check The Vision, buy it for the comedic brilliance of I'd
Give My Right Arm, Overdose is a fairly disposable tune but not
a bad one by any means.
To sum it up in 3 words, JUST BUY IT.
9.5/10 (Minus .5 only because Overdose doesn't need to be on there
and because nobody's perfect, but CC are damn close.)
